The Church of Agios Spyridonas houses the relic of the Guardian Saint of the island; the holiest and most famous church of all. It is a one isled basilica with a wooden roof, once belonging to the Voulgaris family. It has an impressive towering spire (the tallest in the city) that leads to a perforated bellfry. (Reminiscent of that of St. Giorgio dei Greci in Venice). The church is simple on the outside, but on the inside it is very impressive with many relics and votive offerings. The ceiling that was painted in the 18th century by P.. Doxaras, was destroyed and replaced with copies from the 19th century by P. Aspiotis. The marble iconostasis and the opulent shrine are works of the 19th century.
